PGHBOXLAX + USBOXLA: Real Box Lacrosse arrives in Pittsburgh

Former Colorado Mammoth President Steve Govett once described the American box lacrosse landscape as the “Wild West”.

“There are groups basically just doing whatever the heck they want, whether they know what they’re doing or not,” he said. “It’s shocking really.”

Established in 2010 by current University of Denver Associate Head Coach Matt Brown and former National Lacrosse League veteran defenseman Shaydon Santos, the US Box Lacrosse Association has attempted to clean up the country’s reckless renegade box lacrosse reputation in recent years.

With nearly 14,000 members across over 30 states playing USBOXLA-sanctioned lacrosse, American youth are no longer shying away from rinks, they’re filling them.

Why?

“I think one big thing USBOXLA has done is put some real structure behind the game,” said Govett, whose Mammoth youth program joined USBOXLA a few winters back. “They’re giving proper instruction, real rules, and a platform for groups across the US to teach and grow the sport properly. I see really good things happening in the future.”

So does Gary DeCock, whose PGHBOXLAX organization has become an official USBOXLA member. The group will be the city’s first fully sanctioned member offering local youth real box lacrosse.

“I want to make sure what we provide our players moving forward is authentic,” said DeCock. “We want to ensure our players are learning the game properly, but also doing it in a safe and structured environment. USBOXLA gives us the ability to do that.”

Meet our Box Coach, Mark Burnett

Coach Burnett signing autographs while with the Charlotte Copperheads

PSL is proud to introduce our Box Head Coach, Mark Burnett, who will be running our PGHBOXLAX leagues and new PSL Travel Box teams and leading our Box Skills clinics.  There is no one more qualified to teach the game of box lacrosse to our local players than Coach Burnett.  With Mark's depth of expertise there is no need for us to “import” professional box players to teach local players for one session at a time - we know the box game!  Mark is a proud Pittsburgh resident and is very passionate about growing the game of box lacrosse in our area.

Read about Mark’s box lacrosse experience below:

Coach Burnett grew up just outside of Toronto, Ontario and began playing lacrosse at the age of five. Mark won four Provincial box lacrosse championships with the Whitby Warriors.   He played three years in “Jr. B” for the Clarington Green Gaels, winning the OLA (Ontario Lacrosse Association) Jr. B Most Valuable Defensive Player award in 2007.  Mark continued to play for two more years in “Jr. A” for the Whitby Warriors. More recently, Coach Burnett played four years in the Major Series Lacrosse (Sr. A) in Ontario for the Ajax Rock and Oakville Rock.

In 2011, he was drafted by the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League and in 2012 played for the Charlotte Copperheads in the Professional Lacrosse League. Mark has also been a player coach for the Pittsburgh Octane in the CILL.
